The Miss Rhode Island Scholarship Pageant is an official preliminary for the Miss America Competition.
It’s a new era and Miss America is evolving.
The new competition reflects a greater inclusiveness, giving more women the opportunity to earn scholarships and compete for the job of Miss America, to make a difference in their communities, states and beyond. But what will never change? A great history of empowering women and the extraordinary group of smart, talented individuals vying for the job.
The Miss America program exists to provide personal and professional opportunities for young women to promote their voices in culture, politics and the community. It provides a forum for today’s young women to express their viewpoints, talents and accomplishments to audiences during the telecast and to the public-at-large during the ensuing year. Almost all contestants have either received, or are in the process of earning either college or postgraduate degrees, and utilize Miss Rhode Island and Miss America scholarship grants to further their education.
This past year, candidates were no longer judged on outward appearance. That meant the elimination of the swimsuit competition and a choice for each candidate in the Evening Wear category to showcase wardrobe that expressed their own individual style.
But most importantly, the candidates’ voices were heard more often and more clearly! Throughout the competition, candidates had more opportunities to advocate for their social impact initiatives and to demonstrate how they are uniquely qualified for the exciting and challenging 365-day job of being Miss Rhode Island.
